Here are the latest charts and statistics for the Commitment of Traders (COT) data published by the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
The latest COT data is updated through Tuesday August 4th and shows a quick view of how large traders (for-profit speculators and commercial entities) were positioned in the futures markets.
The COT energy market speculator bets were overall lower this week as two out of the six energy markets we cover had higher positioning while the other four markets had lower speculator contracts.

Leading the gains for the energy markets was Heating Oil (375 contracts) with the Bloomberg Index (270 contracts) also seeing a small positive week.
The markets with declines in speculator bets for the week were Brent Oil (-11,191 contracts), WTI Crude (-7,665 contracts), Natural Gas (-6,747 contracts) and with Gasoline (-3,962 contracts) also having lower bets on the week.
The price performances for the Energy markets this week showed lower across-the-board returns. The Bloomberg Commodity Index had the smallest decrease this week with a -0.76% decline. Natural Gas was down by -3.09%, followed by Brent Oil, which dipped by -4.98% on the week.
Heating Oil decreased by -7.43% and was followed by WTI Crude Oil, which was lower by -9.93%.
Leading the declines this week was Gasoline, which fell by -14.40% over the past five days.

COT Strength Scores (a normalized measure of Speculator positions over a 3-Year range, from 0 to 100 where above 80 is Extreme-Bullish and below 20 is Extreme-Bearish) showed that Heating Oil (57.8 percent) and Bloomberg Index (53.2 percent) lead the energy markets this week.
On the downside, Natural Gas (5.7 percent) comes in at the lowest strength level currently and is in Extreme-Bearish territory (below 20 percent). The next lowest strength score was WTI Crude (23.4 percent).

COT Strength Score Trends (or move index, calculates the 6-week changes in strength scores) showed that Heating Oil (15.6 percent) and Gasoline (6.8 percent) lead the past six weeks trends for the energy markets.
Natural Gas (-13.4 percent) leads the downside trend scores currently with Brent Oil (-2.1 percent) as the next market with lower trend scores.
