CFTC Futures data shows speculators increased bets for 10-Year Notes for 3rd week

10 Year Treasury Note Non-Commercial Positions:

Large 10-year treasury note futures traders and speculators raised their overall bullish positions last week to the highest level since 2013 after turning from net bearish to net bullish on July 21st, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday.

The non-commercial futures contracts of the 10-year treasury notes, primarily traded by large speculators and hedge funds, totaled a net position of +65,642 contracts in the data reported for July 28th. This was a weekly change of +38,242 net contracts from the previous week’s total of +27,400 net contracts that was recorded on July 21st.

For the week, the overall standing long positions in 10-year futures increased by 31,941 contracts and combined with a fall in the short positions by 6,301 contracts to register the overall net change of +38,242 contracts for the week.

10 Year US Treasury Note Commercial Positions:

In the commercial positions for the 10-year note on the week, the commercials (hedgers or traders engaged in buying and selling for business purposes) trimmed their overall bullish positions for a third week to a total net position of +93,070 contracts through July 28th. This is a weekly change of -36,370 contracts from the total net position of +129,440 contracts on July 21st.

IEF 7-10 Year Bond ETF:

Over the same weekly reporting time-frame, from Tuesday July 21st to Tuesday July 28th, the 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF gained from 105.14 to 105.85, according to ETF data of iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF).
