GOLD: Large futures traders and gold speculators added to their overall bullish bets in gold for the fourth out of the last five weeks last week, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Monday due to new year’s holiday.
The non-commercial futures contracts of Comex gold futures, traded by large speculators and hedge funds, totaled a net position of +115,837 contracts in the data reported through December 31st. This was a weekly change of +4,927 contracts from the previous week’s total of +110,910 net contracts that was registered on December 23rd.
The rise in the net speculator positions (+4,927 contracts) was due to a decrease in gold bearish positions by -3,010 contracts accompanied with a small rise in the weekly bullish positions by +1,917 contracts.
Over the weekly reporting time-frame, from Tuesday December 23rd to Tuesday December 31st, the gold price saw an increase from approximately $1,178.00 to $1,200.40 per ounce, according to gold futures price data from investing.com.
